How The Great AI Explosion tracks the evolution of AI models.

What this app tracks

The Great AI Explosion is a public timeline of major AI model releases from the largest providers. It tracks models that are available to general users through official consumer products or public-facing platforms, not every research paper, internal benchmark, or API-only experiment.

The goal is to give curious, non-technical people a clear picture of what exists, when it appeared, and who made it, without hype or speculation.

Providers in scope

The timeline currently covers public-facing model releases from six major providers:

  • OpenAI (GPT, o-series)
  • Anthropic (Claude)
  • Google (Gemini, Gemma)
  • Meta (Llama)
  • xAI (Grok)
  • Mistral AI (Mistral, Voxtral)

Smaller labs, API-only releases, rumored models, pending announcements, and speculative entries are excluded. This is not a complete research archive. It is a practical reference for people who want to understand the landscape.

How entries are sourced

Every model entry is grounded in official provider announcements or official product pages whenever possible. Each entry in the dataset includes a source URL pointing to the provider's own domain, such as openai.com, anthropic.com, blog.google, ai.meta.com, x.ai, or mistral.ai.

In some edge cases, a provider does not publish a dedicated announcement post for a model. When that happens, we use the most defensible official source available, such as the provider's main product page or developer documentation.

What we verify

For each model, the dataset tracks:

  • Release date
  • Knowledge cutoff
  • Provider
  • Status (active or extinct)
  • Source URL
  • Date of last review

These fields are reviewed regularly and corrected as better official evidence appears. A validation script checks data integrity before any update reaches production.

Correction policy

If an entry is wrong or outdated, it can be corrected. The project maintains a changelog and a validation workflow to support that process. Human review happens before any change reaches production.

This project favors clarity over hype, accuracy over speed, and plain language over marketing. If something is uncertain, we say so rather than presenting it as settled fact.

Use of this information

The Great AI Explosion is an informational reference tool. It is provided in good faith, and the project aims for accuracy, but the AI landscape changes quickly. Entries may be updated or corrected as better official evidence appears.
